HÀ NỘI – The lush fields of Vietnam are poised to deliver a richer bounty to Australian tables as the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia intensifies efforts to introduce a wider array of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products to the discerning Australian consumer. While Vietnamese goods are already making inroads, even reaching remote regions like the Northern Territory, significant growth opportunities remain, particularly in high-value sectors.

The Trade Office is actively engaging with Australian regulatory bodies to streamline the entry of new Vietnamese products. This includes a recent initiative of 15,000 processed black chicken products from an M-import company introduced to Western Australia and Queensland supermarkets for consumer tasting. This strategic move aims to capture a niche market with a unique Vietnamese offering.

In addition, the famous Cà Mau crab is gaining attention in the Australian market. Nguyễn Phú Hòa, head of the Vietnamese Trade Office, emphasized its promising potential, pointing out that although Australia already has its own mud crab, the quality of the Cà Mau variant stands out. He encouraged Vietnamese businesses to invest in high-quality processing and packaging that meet Australia’s strict standards to build a reputable and recognizable brand.

“The Cà Mau crab, with its exceptional quality, has the potential to command a premium price in the Australian market,” stated Hòa. “Sticking to consistency and following Australian standards is absolutely crucial.”

A robust trade relationship

Vietnamese exports to Australia surged in 2024, led by strong growth in key sectors

Australia stands as Vietnam’s top trade partner in the Oceania region, representing a significant 88% share of Vietnam’s total exports there. In January alone, two-way trade soared past US$1.5 billion, with Vietnamese exports rising by a remarkable 13.9% compared to January 2024. This upward trend highlights the growing appetite for Vietnamese goods in the Australian market.

Hòa emphasized the untapped potential in agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products, noting that Australian consumers have a growing affinity for Vietnamese goods.

In 2024, Vietnam saw a significant boost in exports of agricultural goods, fruits, and vegetables to Australia, reaching over $111 million—marking a strong 25% year-on-year increase. Seafood exports climbed to $343 million, up 9%, while coffee exports surged by 48.3%. Rice exports rose by more than 17%, confectionery products by over 23%, and rubber exports also exceeded a 17% growth rate.

Trade deals like RCEP and CPTPP help Vietnamese exporters boost competitiveness and expand to Australia tariff-free

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) have played a crucial role in enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnamese exporters. Nguyễn Ngọc Luận, CEO of Meet & More Coffee, highlighted how these trade agreements have opened new doors. “Thanks to the CPTPP, we’re able to ship instant coffee to Australia without facing any import tariffs,” he shared. “This advantage has motivated us to adopt advanced technologies and push our product standards even higher.”

Navigating Australia’s stringent standards

Australia offers opportunities but demands strict quality standards and regulations

Although Australia offers attractive prospects for exporters, it is equally known for its high entry standards. Specialists warn that focusing on quality is essential, rather than competing solely on price. The country enforces strict import controls, including complex technical requirements, detailed labeling rules, and food safety regulations that are often even stricter than those in the US or the EU.

“Consumers in Australia are exceptionally selective,” noted a trade specialist. “They value product quality, attractive packaging, thoughtful design, and strong brand credibility. To succeed in this market, businesses must conduct careful research and fully comply with all relevant regulations.”

Vietnamese companies are advised to conduct comprehensive research on potential Australian partners to mitigate risks and engage with importers early in the process. This proactive approach ensures compliance with all import conditions and market standards.

Implications for international buyers

Vietnam-Australia trade offers diverse products, competitive prices, and strong partnerships

The burgeoning trade relationship between Vietnam and Australia presents significant opportunities for international buyers. Here’s how:

  • Diversification of supply chains: Australia’s demand for diverse Vietnamese products allows international buyers to diversify their supply chains, reducing reliance on single-source markets. Products such as high-quality seafood from Ca Mau and unique coffee offerings are attractive to buyers looking for new products.
  • Access to high-quality, competitive products: The CPTPP and RCEP have leveled the playing field, making Vietnamese products more competitive in the Australian market. International buyers can leverage these agreements to access high-quality goods at competitive prices.
  • Niche market opportunities: The success of products like processed black chicken demonstrates the potential for niche market penetration. International buyers can explore unique Vietnamese offerings to cater to specific consumer segments in their respective markets.
  • Emphasis on quality and compliance: The stringent Australian market standards ensure that Vietnamese exporters prioritize quality and compliance. International buyers can be confident in the safety and reliability of Vietnamese products.
  • Building long-term partnerships: The Vietnamese Trade Office’s emphasis on building strong relationships with Australian importers underscores the importance of long-term partnerships. International buyers can forge lasting alliances with Vietnamese exporters, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.
  • Expanding product lines: The growing variety of Vietnamese products entering the Australian market gives international buyers a great chance to expand product lines with goods that have already proven successful in a demanding market.

In conclusion

In conclusion, Vietnam’s strategic push to strengthen its footprint in the Australian market unlocks vast potential for both local exporters and global buyers. By emphasizing high standards, regulatory alignment, and building meaningful partnerships, Vietnamese businesses are well-positioned to thrive in this promising landscape.
